Misinformation Theory: How Creationists Abuse mathematics
In this lecture, Dr. Shallit will focus on the use of mathematical arguments that are sometimes used in an attempt to argue against the theory of evolution. Dr. Shallit will specifically address anti-evolution arguments used by intelligent design proponents. He will also discuss his involvement in the famous “Intelligent Design” court case in Pennsylvania, 2005 (Kitzmiller v. Dover Area School District).
Discussion and questions are encouraged, and no science background is required.
Jeffrey Shallit obtained his Bacheloreate degree in Mathematics from Princeton University and his Ph.D. in Mathematics from the University of California at Berkeley. He has held assistant professorships at the University of Chicago, Dartmouth college, and the Univeristy of Waterloo. Dr. Shallit is currently a professor in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Waterloo. He serves as the Editor-in-chief for the Journal of Integer Sequences and has published books on Algorithmic Number Theory and Automatic Sequences.
