No doubt most of you have read the two-part article in Free Inquiry entitled “Can We Survive?”
I personally believe that we Homo sapiens are closer to our own self-made demise than most
of us realize. The world is changing rapidly, and it is not for the better. There is a point of no return
in the change, and we do not know what and where it is.
Should we pass that point of no return, I am sure that some Homo sapiens will survive - they’ll need
a replacement for the word “sapiens.” Just what from the past will inform the new future?
I am afraid that too much “old time” religion will be around. (Years ago an anthropologist suggested
creating a religion that would make Yucca Mountain taboo, thus keeping future humans away from
the nuclear waste stored underneath)
What of “Free Thought-ism” will survive to inform the future and counter the mental vice of religion?
I think that at a minimum The New Encyclopedia of Unbelief should be printed in a “survival” edition.
Free Thinkers by the thousands all over the world should have a copy. If we pass that point of no return,
copies of at least one good Free Thought book will survive.
