why are the episodes so SHORT?

‘Speaking of Faith’, ‘The Skeptic’s Guide To The Universe’, ‘Unreasonable Doubts’, ‘Humanist Network News’, ‘The Infidel Guy’.........all of these shows are about an hour per episode (and sometimes more)

Because this is a podcast and not a network tv or radio show, why are the shows so ‘truncated’?

When you have an interesting guest and an interesting subject, why not just let the show go on as long as ‘need be’ given the subject at hand?  (within reason of course :)

It just seems to me that most of the time, there’s an opportunity to go into more depth, but poof, the show ends.

Lengthen the show DJ!!!

It’s a good question, Axegrrl. IIRC PoI podcasts used to be longer than they are now; I imagine that this has something to do with their being slotted into campus radio broadcasts. But then the question is, (1) Which has the broader reach, the radio broadcasts or the downloaded podcasts? And (2), Why not produce a longer, “uncut” version for the podcast?

Here’s another vote for a longer show. If the length needs to be standardized, then I would like to see it extended to one hour. But I really like Doug’s suggestion of a freeform podcast that is just as long as it needs to be with, perhaps, a truncated version for broadcast in other venues. (I’m really not sure of the logistics of this or whether it can be done that way.)

Of course, this is easy enough for us to suggest but more work for DJ to implement. grin

I would ADORE a longer show, but I wouldn’t want to sacrifice the outreach potential through college radio stations. I’m speculating, but station managers may fit the show into a highly listened-to time slot at 30 minutes. If they had to move an hour-long PoI into the 4 AM slot, then I’d sacrifice my wish for more of the show in order to satisfy my wish for more to hear the show.

People often argue over the term “god” without defining it. It is almost as if they are using the same term to refer both to a penguin and to a quiche. While both may contain eggs, that’s hardly their most salient characteristic.
