It looks like the big test is quickly approaching (late September they will do the final test and late October is when it should be operational).
I am not sure why but I am kind of hoping nothing in string theory gets observed or proven and that it is finally dismissed and newer and fresh ideas looked into. Maybe I have been biased by Lee Smolin and his book, The Trouble With Physics , but that’s my honest feeling.
Any thoughts?

Darn, if the end of the world is coming that soon, I’m definitely voting absentee!

I kind of hoping for the black hole. The only thing known to man faster than a news cycle.

Many! That’s why we need to smash some electrons now and see which of those thoughts, if any, are worth anything.

I hope they prove string theory and figure out the other dimensions! Only 8 to go!

I couldn’t care less what we find or what implications it has, I just hope we find something . And while we’re wishing, I hope it’s groundbreaking and century defining. Regardless, I can’t wait till they fire it up!

Does anyone know if it will be possible to watch it live as they turn on the collider (the tower of Babel ) tomorrow? It will be very early in the morning here in America, but I wouldn’t want to miss it.

Hmm, I am not sure, Chocotacoi8. It will be 3:30 a.m. in Toronto, so that’s 2:30 a.m. CDT, and 12:30 a.m. PDT, isn’t it? I really don’t know. Sorry.

I missed the actual start up but was able to watch the celebrations here in Arizona from 2 am on. The celebrations are wonderful to watch as everything went smoothly. Fox News was showing fears that this was a dangerous thing. The sound is poor from my internet link but I was delighted to be involved at all. Thank you for this thread.

I missed it too. I got up at 3:15 but was unable to connect to the live video. So I ate a plum and went back to sleep.

There is a special website set up to check if the Large Hadron Collider has destroyed the earth
