I zoomed in on Jules’ link there, and you can see from the seams in it that it is obviously a painted backdrop in some studio, probably over at Disney, which is in cahoots with the space program.

Perhaps just as interesting to me are the numerous large rectangular and seemingly even cut tiles seen on the ground.  If I had built a cabin at that location I could be proud of laying such a nice walkway!  The “log” could be any number of things naturally formed by sedimentary, intrusive igneous or even volcanic processes, but I’d have to suspect the tiles were something similar to slate, which can break quite nicely like that.  It’s always hard to tell from just a picture.

I went to your link without reading your post too carefully and I was initially thinking that maybe NASA reddened the images to make them appear more alien and therefore more interesting.  I can’t imagine why NASA would cover up the fact that Mars is more hospitible.  They have been trying to drum up interest in Martian exploration not downplay it.  Like the 9/11 “truthers” this just goes to show that if you can get something on the
