I see nothing wrong with the statement and think it is wonderful that he said it. 
It seems like some active defending of that statement is in order.

Sometimes you might accomplish more by assuming that the new paradigm is the norm, rather than actively promoting it.  In this case responding as though it is perfectly normal and expected that a US President would treat non-believers and believers as equals.  Sort of like Paul Brown teaching his players to act like they “have been in the end zone before”....

guess, i’m just turning into that grumpy old guy hanging out his window:
“I’m not going to take it anymore!”
“It’s bs and here’s why and why and why!”
deep down I think I have few goals left… among them is to vent at all the stupidity I’ve had the opportunity to watch unfold this past half century, and to perhaps touch someone - once in a while.

May I ask: what good is Atheism anyways?

Atheism is not a philosophy IMO so in and of itself it offers no particular value except that it offers no delusion.

for some people who are feeling spiritually conflicted,  atheism may present a perspective that is more consistent and coherent than a religious one.  a study of interviews with atheists recovering from traumatic spinal injuries reported that their atheism actually gave them a coping advantage, by avoiding the kind of spiiritual crises (“why did this happen to me”) that they saw in their religious peers. 

in fact, the data show that committed atheists are no more depressed than committed believers, and are less depressed than wavering agnostics and half-hearted believers.
