There is a new religious movement to “adopt” frozen embryos that will be destroyed, and implant them in the wives of Christian couples. They’re called “snowflake babies” or something like that. It’s getting very popular. They are lobbying to make it illegal to destroy frozen unwanted embryos and want them to instead be passed on to “good Christian couples” for birthing and rearing or else kept in storage indefinitely so they aren’t “killed.” They believe that every embryo deserves a chance to be implanted.
And what if the couple whose ovum and spermatozoa were combined don’t want their child to be trapped into living with and being brainwashed by fundamentalists? Will they be able to prevent this “snowflaking” from occurring?

At this time the couple who donated the sperm and eggs have legal control over the embryos and must consent for someone to “adopt them” for use. They sign a legal contract (similar to a sperm donor’s contract) to prevent someone trying to claim the child later or take back consent. At the moment it is all by consent and can actually be helpful to couples with fertility problems and health problems that prevent them from using their own sperm or eggs.
I have heard interviews with some of the proponents of taking “throw-aways” where they say they are lobbying to make it illegal to “kill frozen embryos” and want to make it illegal to “throw them out.” They want them to be put up for “adoption” or stored indefinitely until some other family member uses them. They also want to make it illegal to use them for scientific research.
I don’t think they will succeed in forcing people to give their embryos to other couples, it seems it would violate privacy and personal rights, as well as medical ethics. It won’t get very far. Hey if people WANT to give their unused embryos to childless couples, that is fine! Make a happy family, help a couple with infertility.
I also hear a lot of craziness from Christians who feel they MUST use all embryos they created, they don’t want to throw them out, and wouldn’t dream of giving them to others. So the parents implant multiple embryos at once. We see how well that has gone over in recent years!
