and what about fertility clinics?  surely the creation of all those superfluous embryos must be as equally affrontive to god.  i never hear anti-choicers talk about fertility clinics.

You’d be surprised how many religious sects would like those clinics to disappear, but they are just too popular with the members to take much action against. Everyone knows someone who is having difficulty getting pregnant, or who has a daughter/son having difficulty. People will fight to have the right to have children and grandchildren, if that is the only option to have ‘the bloodline’ passed down. LOL Those same ‘pro-lifers’ have absolutely no problem with having the extras put into cold storage or destroyed to prevent their use for implantation in sterile women or use for research.

There is a new religious movement to “adopt” frozen embryos that will be destroyed, and implant them in the wives of Christian couples. They’re called “snowflake babies” or something like that. It’s getting very popular. They are lobbying to make it illegal to destroy frozen unwanted embryos and want them to instead be passed on to “good Christian couples” for birthing and rearing or else kept in storage indefinitely so they aren’t “killed.” They believe that every embryo deserves a chance to be implanted.

Next up, civil rights for sperm and capital murder charges for masturbation.  rolleyes

Women might be charged with manslaughter every month, when they menstruate. They obviously did not work hard enough to make sure the egg stuck around to get its soul. Through the woman’s neglectful laziness, the egg never grows into one of God’s children.

Get movin’ ladies. Every time you purchase a box of Kotex, the baby Jesus cries.  ohh

Then again, all nuns would go to jail. Or are they exempt? Will have to consult clergy to find out.  wink

And what if the couple whose ovum and spermatozoa were combined don’t want their child to be trapped into living with and being brainwashed by fundamentalists?  Will they be able to prevent this “snowflaking” from occurring?

At this time the couple who donated the sperm and eggs have legal control over the embryos and must consent for someone to “adopt them” for use. They sign a legal contract (similar to a sperm donor’s contract) to prevent someone trying to claim the child later or take back consent. At the moment it is all by consent and can actually be helpful to couples with fertility problems and health problems that prevent them from using their own sperm or eggs.

I have heard interviews with some of the proponents of taking “throw-aways” where they say they are lobbying to make it illegal to “kill frozen embryos” and want to make it illegal to “throw them out.” They want them to be put up for “adoption” or stored indefinitely until some other family member uses them. They also want to make it illegal to use them for scientific research.

I don’t think they will succeed in forcing people to give their embryos to other couples, it seems it would violate privacy and personal rights, as well as medical ethics. It won’t get very far. Hey if people WANT to give their unused embryos to childless couples, that is fine! Make a happy family, help a couple with infertility.

I also hear a lot of craziness from Christians who feel they MUST use all embryos they created, they don’t want to throw them out, and wouldn’t dream of giving them to others. So the parents implant multiple embryos at once. We see how well that has gone over in recent years!

What if the frozen embryos were used to create an army of indoctrinated atheists to intellectually and socially battle the religious fundamentalists.  Would the fundamentalists be happy about that since the embryos weren’t destroyed?

The answer is, no. They’d probably have a fund raiser in order to keep the embryos frozen indefinitely rather than given to atheists.  wink

I nominate myself to bear as many atheist children as possible. All I require is financial assistance for the project, as the cost of living in the New York suburbs is astronomical. And a bigger house. 1,300 SF ain’t gonna do it. I will become the Michelle Duggar of atheism. Now, we just have to out-bid the Christian snow-flake embryo purchasers.  LOL

So, instead of snowflake babies, what would they be called? Something quite opposite I would think. Sparks? Embers?  wink
