(Two minor religious sex-abuse cases in are the news today: (1) an employee of a kosher caterer is being tried for soliciting young boys, in a rare case of an Orthodox Jewish accused sex abuser being tried in a civil court instead of being covered up by the religious community; and (2) a coach at a Jewish religious school pleads guilty, and gets probation, for coercing other young boys into sending him nude photos.  Both cases are in NJ.—Josh)

An Orthodox community in North Jersey is trying to reconcile the arrest of one of its own on charges of attempting to have sex with two 14-year-old boys. . . .

The charges come at a crucial moment in the history of Orthodox Jews nationwide, as they try to determine how best to deal with predators in their midst. . . .

Those unfamiliar with the Orthodox faith are only just discovering the struggles its people are dealing with. And yes, there are similarities to the scandals within the Catholic Church—with prior incidents handled, for want of a better term, in-house. . . .

With a series of simple “yes” answers, Adam Melzer of Teaneck pleaded guilty to child endangerment charges involving nude pictures of young boys taken while Melzer was a youth program supervisor and basketball coach at the Rosenbaum Yeshiva of North Jersey in River Edge.

Melzer agreed to a plea deal, which enables him to avoid prison but requires life-time parole supervision and for him to register as a sex offender under Megan’s Law. . . .
