I stumbled across the Church of Reality web site (the
author seems to seriously be perusing official church
status from the government, and has naturalist ideas
which are maintained as sacred and held with reverence)
and one page says, "Marc Perkel, the founder of the Church
of Reality is now listed on the American TSA list as a
terrorist suspect."

I knew that reality can scare people into a retreat for
the escapist fantasy world, but realism alone couldn’t
make you seem to be terrorizing to anyone.  This sounds
politically motivated to me.

(I edited this because I saw the first URL I sent displayed
an arbitrary newsflash each time it was downloaded, and
then I found a stable URL.)

Wasn’t Ted Kennedy on a similar list?  I seem to remember him being flagged at an airport…maybe last year?  The year before?

[quote author=“dougsmith”]I don’t have time to go through all the
self-description there. Anyone know what’s up with them?

I see they have roots in atheism and humanism ... but why
the “church” talk?

:?

The web site talks about getting a tax exempt status,
falling a bit short of the legal requirements for a
church, a church having less scrutiny than a non-profit.
The site discusses realist ideas, naturalism, humanism,
science, “If it’s real - we believe in it!”, etc.  I don’t
really get it, I still haven’t figured out what Religious
Humanism is, which still sounds like an oxymoron to me
because if humanism rejects the supernatural including
gods, then how can it be a religion?  Maybe the Church
of Reality is a Religious Humanist site, or maybe not.
I just found it horrifying if the security agencies are
targeting realists and the like.  I hear that they are
targeting peace activists, but I haven’t heard of them
targeting the people, including congress members, who’ve
declared a “culture war” on approximately half the country
in violation of the union.  I guess I’m ranting a bit,
I’ll stop.
