About the Victoria Police looking at getting involved:
VICTORIA Police has called for sweeping changes to the way Melbourne’s Catholic Church deals with sex crime allegations, as The Age reveals that only one priest has been defrocked for abuse in the past 14 years.
Nearly 300 allegations of sexual abuse have been substantiated by church investigations since 1996, when the ‘‘Melbourne Response’’ was set up to deal with complaints. It is believed the abuses were perpetrated by approximately 100 priests, a figure the church will not confirm. Just one priest has been defrocked as a result. Some other priests lost their role serving a parish full-time.
About a lawyer paid by the Church to investigate claims of abuse:
The Age can now reveal that in August last year Mr O’Callaghan told an alleged victim that his alleged groping by a priest was unlikely to constitute a crime. In a letter he said: ‘‘Without seeking to dissuade you from reporting the matter to police if you so desire, I must say that the conduct you described is unlikely to be held by a court as criminal conduct.’‘
Mr O’Callaghan is paid by the church to inquire into allegations of clerical abuse, interview victims and the accused priests, and make findings on abuse claims. The findings are used by the church to gauge financial aid for victims.
Grubbier, and grubbier. I hope this scandal destroys the Church.
Yeah, good luck there. There best we can hope for is most Catholics leave the church and start their own. With any common sense those people will institute reforms such as allowing priests to marry as prescribed in the Bible, and maybe even paying attention to what their zombie savior preached.
I think the long term implications will be profound. Almost again to the reformation in how it will change the Church. Of course the old gaurd will cling to power as long as possible… but in a generation or two, things will change.
Recent article in Melbourne Age today[/url]... reports of over 100 preists abusing children, and the Church defrocks ONE of them.
hmmm, I wonder what sex act he had to perform that disgusted them so much to defrock him. Perhaps there is a number limit, you can sexually abuse 99, but one hundred is waaay over the allowed limit, you know, sort of like speeding…

Yes, it’s “Well that’s OK” while that “Those acts” are bad. Interesting take on morality.

Nah, Asanta. His problem was that he wouldn’t share.

Hey, at least they defrocked one!.......the Pope apparently only ‘takes action’ when priests/archbishops are involved in *gasp* consenting sexual relationships.
*see: Zambian archbishop Milingo*
You know, between the egregious and evil actions (or non-actions) of the Catholic church and seeing footage from the docu “The Cove”, I don’t feel an especially strong bond with my species right now.

The problem is distinguishing the black sheep hiding among thousands of lambs. They pretend to act holy, though deep inside they’re filled with carnal desires. Human as we are….
No the problem is deeper than that. The other priests and bishops know who the ‘black sheep’ are, they are just unwilling to ‘cull’ them.
Yeah isn’t it funny when priests are caught in adult relationships, it is a huge scandal in the church and a big public defrocking occurs? But when children are taken for sexual acts, it’s hushed up and allowed to continue.
I recall a priest around here who was found to have an adult male lover. The archdiocese and the bishop called press conferences to declare their disgust and announce that he was being fired. Yet the same folks who had the big public firing and press conference were silent on accusations of molestation by some of their other priests, and transferred them out of the state! (The records were made public.)
When a priest in Florida, I believe, was found to be having an affair with a woman a year or two ago, a huge public scandal ensued and it was on the news. High ranking church officials stated his behavior would not be tolerated!
An Italian journalist and an artist have created a map of the documented cases of abuse by members of the catholic church. It is in Italian, but easy to follow, they are planning to create an English version. The dark blue countries are areas of the world where 20% or more are catholic. If you roll your cursor over the dots, you will get more information about the cases. http://www.ilpost.it/2010/05/26/la-mappa-degli-abusi-sessuali-nella-chiesa/
