Wrong again, Write4U. The fertility in Europe started to decline in the 19th century. In those days probably everybody was a Christian.
Are you confusing decline in growth with decline in population? Even if we achieve a growth rate of .5% the population will double in 140 years (two generations). Any steady growth will produce a doubling effect. Only the time this will take is affected, not the result. As long as babies are born and we enable the population to live longer, we must deal with the result of exponential growth. I see this as the single most important and pressing issue when discussing quality of life for all. What is “good” for people is bad for the eventual consequence of any resultant growth.

Just a thought. Could this decline be due to a changing ratio of males and females? Single women tend to have fewer children. Horrible as it is, war is an effective way to control population, especially today we have to ability to kill people (predominantly men soldiers) by the thousands in a single instant. If we were able to abolish war and disease the population growth would start to climb again.
As much as I hate to be a messenger of doom, I cannot see a bright future based on improving the quality of life and therefore longevity of the world’s population, without a mechanism of stopping growth. Something has to give. Our enemy is not ourselves, our enemy is Natural law and that ain’t an enemy easily defeated.
China, already an incredibly populous country, has recognized this fact and has restricted the number of children allowed per family. The result of course is an ever increasing older population (relative to young). Where that leads eventually, who knows?

Of course, he had a wide variety of female patients who he had talk about their most secret sexual ideas. I doubt that he was deprived.
