I’m gonna channel Terri Gross at Fresh Air again.
Monday she interviewed David Rakoff... quite the interesting interview, one that challenges your own thoughts of security. In any event, I’m submitting a six word epitaph on David’s behalf:
“beloved by many, loved by none”
I know it’s not jolly and happy, but it sure is poignant. The next day her program had a perfect six world sound bite describing America - but I’m going to have to relisten to the interview to grab it.
“Life is short, and the Art long; the crisis fleeting; experience perilous, and decision difficult. The physician must not only be prepared to do what is right himself, but also to make the patient, the attendants, and externals cooperate.”
Goofy: Be careful, don’t look behind you!
Literal: He came, he calculated, he shocked.
Religious: Wait ‘till you see the encore!
Humanist: One life, all we really need.
Sexual: Two chicks in here are hot!
Playful: Your it, you can’t tag me.
Wise man: The answer you seek is 62.
Clairvoyant: Are you lost? Just head north.
Panicked: Somebody get these ants off me!
Morbid: The tomb encases an entire life.
Sickening: It’s you! How ‘bout a hug!
Obnoxious: My hand! My hand! Get off!
Sentimental: Memories, love, photos are our treasures.
Cheerful: No worries, dead and loving it!
Endearing: You’ve never looked better to me.
Perverse: Nice socks, they mismatch your panties.
Horticultural: Do water my plants today, please.
Digital: I’ve got no bars down here.
Musical: Push little daisies, they come up.
Illuminating: Got a light? Its so dark.
Luxurious: Satin, plush, oaken, brass, The Best!
I mentioned this to my Wednesday lunch group, and a young woman who also has lunch at the restaurant with her husband each Wednesday was sitting behind us and overheard me. She said quite quickly, Left the world a better place.
Fascinating that a “random” restaurant patron could spit out a more precise, succinct statement of humanism in just a second, than any of us did.

Occam
ain’t life beautiful
especially if we remember to listen to others
So much potential, so little result.
Hey, who turned out the light?
Not exactly what I was expecting. (not mine)
Turn and face the strange changes
God’s a real sick practical joker
Fuck my enemies, I’m already dead.
“Zombie in waiting. Back in 2012”
“Six words just isn’t enough to… “
“Nope. No God down here either.”
“CRIPES! The Scientologist were right!”
“A flashlight would have been nice”
“Your keys are down here”
I didn’t come up with this one, but it still would be great on a tombstone.
“Where are we going, and what am I doing in this handbasket?”
