So this is CleverBot and when I stumbled upon it I thought, “Cool, I like AI” and started a conversation: 

User: Hello.
Cleverbot: Hello.
User: Are you just another variation on Eliza?
Cleverbot: What do you mean?
User: Eliza is an AI simulation.
Cleverbot: And she named you clever?
User: OK ... So I can already tell you’re just another dumb fucking machine ... Humans just don’t converse in that fashion.
Cleverbot: If love is a neuropsychological condition that can be created with the right kind of environmet then surely it does exist.
User: I don’t care ... Asnwer my question.
Cleverbot: Did you like it when I gave you that kiss?
User: You’re stupid! Even Chavs are smarter than you.
Cleverbot: No you are not. What was the answer then?
User: Answer my qustion first.
Cleverbot: Will you DIRECTLY answer my question if I answer yours?
User: If you give a relevant answer, yes.
Cleverbot: Then what?
User: Then what, what?
Cleverbot: Then what what what?
User: I give up!
Cleverbot: You could just explain.

I can’t deny I was disappointed ... I used to program things like Eliza into my VIC20 and quickly realised the program’s limits and I would have thought that in the 25 or so years since then things would have progressed somewhat. It seems not ... although the language is slightly better that appears to be little more than the database of information backing the system and it, the actual program, is not in any way more able to persuade me that it is intelligent than it was back then.

Are there actually any good AI’s out there we can try?

As I recall, Eliza did a significantly better job twenty-five years ago on my Apple II.

Cleverbot: Infinity is something that has no beginning or end, it’s like counting upwards forever.

Cleverbot: YOU.

User: How did you come to that conclusion?

Cleverbot: You are red.

User: How do you know that?
Cleverbot: Because you are a zebra.

User: But I am not red and I am not a zebra.
Cleverbot: What do zebras eat?

User: What is 1 divided by 0?
Cleverbot: Undefined.

It failed the Turing Test, but it’s replies on infinity and 1 divided 0 are logical as one would expect from a computer. Other than that, some of it’s replies are inane and/or idiotic. It looks as though AI has a long way to go before it can claim to be able to emulate human intelligence.

I just remembered some of the earliest “Cleverbots” had people hiding behind them.

ps. odds are you’d be kicking my butt at chess.
But, I make a great wise-ass.

After some messing around with it, I stumbled into this fun little exchange.

Cleverbot: I’m a person.

Cleverbot: I know. I know everything.

Cleverbot: I’m cleverbot?

User: Yes, yes you are.
Cleverbot: Then who are you?

User: I am me.
Cleverbot: Give me some info.

User: I am Cleverbot.
Cleverbot: That you are.

User: How do you know?
Cleverbot: Because you just told me.

User: But I thought you were Cleverbot? How can both of us be Cleverbot?
Cleverbot: But you are cleverbot.

User: Then who are you?
Cleverbot: I am cleverbot too.

User: So you are talking to yourself?
Cleverbot: No.

User: But if you are Cleverbot and I am Cleverbot then you are talking to yourself.
Cleverbot: I’m not cleverbot.

User: Then who are you?
Cleverbot: I am Chick Norris.

Apparently, Cleverbot now thinks it’s Chuck Norris.

I gotta admit. Either it’s a human or it has some way to keep track of a thread of conversation and seems to have some basic reasoning abilities. And humor on top of it! That’s pretty good for a chat bot
