I’m trying to find an article debunking the “prophesies” of Edgar Cayce.
A friend is convinced he was truly psychic and I’d like to intelligently explain otherwise.
Thanks.

Get a copy of Michael Shermer’s book Why People Believe Weird Things. As I recalled he devoted perhaps a chapter, or at least a substantial part of a chapter, on Cayce.

Hi Mark,

In general, one of the best places to start is Skepdic. They have a page on Cayce HERE. And don’t forget the links at the bottom.

Welcome to the Forum, BTW!

Cheers,

The following books have skeptical reference to Edgar Cayce:

Flim-Flam: Psychics, ESP, Unicorns and other Delusions by James (“The Amazing”) Randi.
Encyclopedia of Claims, Frauds, and Hoaxes of the Occult and Supernatural by James Randi.
Science and the Paranormal: Probing the Existence of the Supernatural by Various Authors, Edited by George O. Abell and Barry Singer.
The New Age: Notes of a Fringe Watcher by Martin Gardner.
ExtraSensory Deception by Henry Gordon.

A sampling of some of Cayce’s predictions from Gordon’s book:

-From a religious Russia will come “the greater hope of the world.”
-There will be a full-scale revolution in the United States.
-Earthquakes will destroy New York, Los Angeles, and San Francisco.
-The waters of the Great Lakes will empty into the Gulf of Mexico.
-The mythical lost continent of Atlantis will rise from the oceans in the 1960s as a result of these catastrophic upheavals.

Great! You can also do a search of back issues of SI at their webpage HERE.  (Though not every article is available online).
