But I think you may be in error in this: that there is no ‘choice’ involved in religious belief or non-belief. People make irrational or self-serving choices all the time, even ones that hurt them, and will find a way to rationalize those choices to themselves and others.

The difficulty I have about “choice” (I’m suspecting ShadowSot shares this) can be illustrated with the following example:

Consider the following options. For convenience, let’s rule out any other options or labeling this a false dilemma.

The apparent movement of the Sun throughout a given day is best described by:

A: Kepler, Newtonian, Einsteinian theories

B: A secret message only described by dolphins

C: The last fortune you read out of a fortune cookie

My question is, do you have the ability to firmly convince yourself that options B or C are true with the same conviction that you might have with option A?

The person first has to know that there are choices to begin with.
If any two options are not known there is no choice. The one known becomes the model.

I do not choose to believe this. With my education at its current point, it is the conclusion I’ve arrived to.

This requires careful investigation. Two reasons why:

Philosopher David Hume famously said: “Reason is, and ought only to be the slave of the passions, and can never pretend to any other office than to serve and obey them”.

Likewise Professor Jonathan Haidt found that morality (at the cultural level) is emotional, and reason is an afterthought to try and explain our emotion.

So, don’t be surprised to find yourself acting subconsciously on emotion, but telling yourself that it’s rational.

So how do we find out? We need to ask ourselves exactly why we are an atheist i.e.
- do we believe there definitely is no God?
- do we believe a godless universe is more likely than a god universe?
- do we simply lack a belief in God?

And then we need to examine the reasons why we reached our conclusions, to see if they hold up rationally.

In my case, I can’t say for sure that God does not exist, and neither can I say that a godless universe is more likely.

Some say that “absence of evidence is evidence of absence of God” but God could be out there invisible to us.
Some say the nature of the universe proves that God is less likely to exist. I could be wrong, but as yet I’ve seen no reason why a godless or god universe is more likely.

Richard Dawkins says “there almost certainly is no god”, and the lack of evidence makes me intuitively want to agree. However, I can see no convincing arguments for such a strong belief.

In the absence of certainty, we are left to make an emotional choice for or against atheism. I chose atheism because:
- i find it insulting to believe in an invisible God
- i don’t like the mental demands of an imaginary God in my head
-i don’t like a God who is so elusive, hard to understand, and threatens hell
- i like the freedom to follow my own conscience
- i don’t want to waste my life worrying about a possible afterlife
- finally, the whole God topic is one big pain in the proverbial and I mentally kick the idea out of my head just to get some peace.

If you “do not choose to be an atheist” then the onus is on you to prove that it is impossible or unlikely for God to exist.

I suspect many atheists haven’t rationally thought the decision through. Rather, they’re just offended by the lack of evidence and, wait for it, chose not to consider all possibilities.

So, despite many atheists exhibiting cocksure confidence, they are probably more emotional than they think.

I don’t see why a lack of “certainty” (by which I take you to mean absolute certainty) necessarily leaves us with making an emotional decision. A lack of that degree of certainty due to epistemic limitations only results in making approximations. There’s no reason to think that making an approximation necessarily leads to emotional decision making.

No, I agree with you. It was just another example of non-choice. IMO, complete lack of comparison also leaves just the only remaining option, however that one known option could be A, B, C, or D(eities), as it used to be in the past with mythological and biblical interpretation.

I’m posting this at a few different forums. I’m trying to get some feedback on it and see what other’s thoughts on it are.
It’s something I typed up when I had some free time after the question had been put to me.

I do not want to be an atheist.
This is one thing that has struck me when I spoke openly about my atheism.
“Why do you choose to believe this?”
I find sympathy with those of the homosexual community when I hear this.
I do not choose to believe this. With my education at its current point, it is the conclusion I’ve arrived to.
There was a time when I could make myself believe in religion. I held it close to my heart, though as time passed and I grew older I began to clutch it. Much as one does a favored toy when they begin to just grasp the pointlessness of the toy.
It is not that I don’t want to believe it, in fact at times I want to, and used to deeply. But just because you want to believe something, doesn’t make it true.

I am asked at times how can I find meaning in this life, if I do not have the grace of heaven to look forward to up on my passing.
This is a question I have problems answering. Not because of any nihilism I find in my life’s outlook, in fact far from that, but instead because when I was a theist, I found no satisfaction in my faith.
I have found much more satisfaction in life recently, and only some of it of is due to relinquishing my faith. Much more has come from other reasons. I can’t really weigh my life while a theist against my life as an atheist.
The most I can say about it is, while I was a Christian, it was preached to me that God would provide my calling. So I sat and waited. That’s not to say I didn’t do anything, but I waited for revelation to show me what I was destined to do.

Since I’ve become an atheist, I’ve taken into my own hands to find where my future will go.
I am still struggling with finding my heading in life, though now I begin to see some real possibilities that never crossed my mind before.

To me, I do have to add, that the repeated indications of Heaven as the goal leads me to find the Christian view somewhat lacking. Is there nothing good on this Earth except as a proxy towards entrance to heaven?

My only gripe is that could have been here much sooner, but why bother myself with sand already passed?
When it comes to the religious texts, well…
To me, the words of scientists like Carl Sagan, Richard Feynman, or Steven Hawking, or fiction writers like Isaac Asimov, or Gene Roddenberry, or Terry Pratchett, are much more enlightening and inspiring than the Christian Bible, the Jewish Talmud, or the Islamic Quran, among the many other religious texts of the world.
Give me Carl Sagan’s Pale Blue Dot, or Richard Feynman’s Six Easy Pieces, Steven Hawking’s a Brief History of Time, or any number of books that offer in personal insights into our present, and into our future.
Carl Sagan once said in Cosmos that
“Science is a collaborative enterprise spanning the generations we remember those who prepared the way seeing for them also.”
I believe this is not just true in science, but all things. Everything we do recalls in some form or manner some person we knew who had an influence in our lives.
They are present in how we speak, in how we think, in how we interact with one another. We are all of us the legacy of one another. It is up to us whether the legacy we pass on is one for which others will be proud to remember us by.
To me, atheism is a much a part of me as my hair color, and is as about as important to me. Which is to say, not much.
However, despite it not being important to me, it has come to be important to me.
Religion is something I am being constantly assaulted with. In the news, in politics, in merchandising, and on the radio.
I hear from a president that I am not a citizen. Yes, I know, there’s no source for the quote, but it’s more important that people take it seriously, treating it as if it were true. One side doesn’t care, the other quite definitely does.
Atheists are, in the United States are the least trusted minority.
This, more than anything has made me take it personally.
Do I love my country?
This is a odd question.
Being born in this country has given me access to some great opportunities in the past (which I’ve mostly squandered.) and some great opportunities in the future (which I hope not to squander.)
Yes, it’s by luck I was born here, but it was luck that had me born to my family, and luck that had me find my friends. I can’t help but find some sort of attachment to them.
At times, with what I hear from the media or local religious foundation,or even within my own family, it makes for something of a strained relationship.
However, as I mentioned before I care little that I am an atheist. I see the affect that religious fundamentalism. Which I don’t hold quite true… those in the States who are supposed to be fundies tend more towards that unique version which benefits themselves, more strict than more tolerant religious groups, but similar in vein.
I find myself agreeing with Christopher Hitchens when he writes he leaves the destruction of religious edifices to those who are most adept at it, that being those who are also religious.
However, when it affects those things I care about, like the sciences, people, and my country… there I must admit I find a voice and passion to speak about something that I find was really something that was never really important to me in the first place.

You have more understanding about God’s plans than you realize. God corrupted all the flesh of man in the DNA to keep us from knowing who we are or who he is. The DNA twists our thoughts which is our life in God. These thoughts are processed by our brains to make our bodies function according to God’s plans. In other words, our bodies are like puppets and our thoughts are the created part of us that remains in God at all times. God exists everywhere so he’s inside and outside all the atoms. Our bodies are like antenna’s that pick up our thoughts that run our bodies.

Think of our bodies as a computer mainframe with all the periferals and the processor, which is like our brain. The hard drive with the program and all the data is like our life thoughts in God. The only thing missing is energy and God’s first creation was light energy. This light power puts everything into action, even the computer that needs energy to run. All these components are necessary to make us appear to be living on earth and be able to walk, talk, see, hear, smell, taste and touch. Man is incapable of doing any of these things with just a body. Just like a computer mainframe without a harddrive and energy to run it. It lays dead without these things. Our bodies die when our thoughts are no longer being transmitted into our brains.

This means that God is in total control of everything we do but it was all planned out before creation. We’re just living according to his plans and there’s nothing we can do to change it.

You might want something but you can’t have it because God planned something different for you. He wanted you to be an atheist in his overall plans for this age. If you look around you with an open mind and see all the different lifestyles and beliefs of man,  you will learn that it can’t be man’s ideas that separate himself from others. Men will travel a distance to be with others who are like himself because he can’t change the way he is. Try stop your lust, greed, jealousy, laziness, etc. You will find it almost impossible to do. Some people quit drugs and never do it again while others die from them. God has some of them struggle by using and quitting all throughout their lives. This is all part of the deception he wanted during this age to keep people confused about what he’s doing with his chosen people.

He’s using his saints, Jesus and the prophets to reveal his knowledge that is needed for the next age after this earth makes it’s changes. There will be many new bodies for God to use but they won’t have any vocabulary or language stored in memory. This knowledge will be needed to guide them to form a new vocabulary and language. Then God can reveal more knowledge once they start speaking to each other. God can’t speak unless he has a body to speak with.

I’m one of his chosen ones who speak for him. I’m only here to speak the word to end this age and this will end when the earth’s crust is melted by hot molten lava. So God has revealed enough knowledge now and spoken his last prophesies to close this age of man and get rid of his corrupt flesh. Never again will we have corrupt DNA in our new bodies in paradise. In fact, we will never die in new age so look forward to lots of living after you die.

Don’t worry about your life here anymore. Just live out the short time we have left and enjoy your family and friends because you’ll never see them again after this destruction. Our new bodies won’t contain any memory of this age so it will be like having amnesia. We can’t experience time in God so it will seem like a good night’s sleep from the time we die until we wake up in a new body.

Something tragically comic about that which appealled to my sense of humour.

i was an alcoholic so I understand these things about addictions very well. Now I speak for him and that is something I definitely hadn’t planned on doing in my life. God runs the show for all of us whether we believe or don’t belief. That belief thing is what religious people pretend to do. I never had to believe anything. I just obeyed all the commands that were forced on me.

Seems God was either confused or deceitful the first time around, but don’t worry, He will set it all straight and we will never know where we came from and what we did, or more importantly, what He did. Amnesia is the tool of God. A few billion years of mistakes really does not matter in God’s grand scheme. He is learning as we go along.
I am so happy to have a “chosen one” among us, who will enlighten us as to God’s will and intentions. A modern day Prophet.

bjhulk, I am sorry, but my impression is that you have traded one addiction for another. An addictive personality. I am happy to admit that your conversion apparently has solved one problem. Don’t let the new addiction spoil your personal journey, by trying to place others in your position.

I just obeyed all the commands that were forced on me.

Sounds like a Master/Slave Relationship.  wink

This means that God is in total control of everything we do but it was all planned out before creation. We’re just living according to his plans and there’s nothing we can do to change it.

So this means every time a man robs a bank, God planned it?  Every time a woman is raped, God planned it?  Every time a child is murdered, God planned it?  And not just the crimes, but conspiracy to commit the crimes in the first place…and then falsely accuse innocent people after the fact!  Where can I get a cosmic arrest warrant for God?  He has committed some heinous crimes and needs to be held accountable.

Seems it is not just a Master/slave relationship, but also a BDSM relationship. Seems that Master has a penchant for making people suffer.

That was funny.

The bit that tickled me most was

God has some of them struggle by using and quitting all throughout their lives.

Something tragically comic about that which appealled to my sense of humour.

Stephen

i was an alcoholic so I understand these things about addictions very well. Now I speak for him and that is something I definitely hadn’t planned on doing in my life. God runs the show for all of us whether we believe or don’t belief. That belief thing is what religious people pretend to do. I never had to believe anything. I just obeyed all the commands that were forced on me.

You were an alcoholic. I’m more of the type who God has struggling by quitting and using all throughout my life, although rather less quitting than using.

Stephen

I tried several times before God removed the desire and that happened in 1979. I’m the only one who’s sobered up in my family that’s loaded with drug addicts and alcoholics. I would have never made it without the creator. Now I know that it was all planned out so wherever you are in life today is being controlled by your creator. You have no choices, even when you seem to make choices for yourselve.

The worst thing you can think of was all planned by God for his deception he needed during this age. The pope is no different than a serial killer on death row.
