My only fear in these types of satires is that they could spawn real “therapies” by people who take them seriously.

I was trying to point out for every foolish ( or even parody!) ‘medical’ belief, there are one’s equally absurd that people take very seriously. Go figure. Mind yer eyes and try not to bleed on someone who’s so not your type

I congratulated the author of the original article on a parody in the noble tradition of Jonathan Swift’s A Modest Proposal. The fact that people sometimes miss that it’s a parody is a testament both to how well-written it is and to how ridiculous so much “real” woo is!

I am familiar with both Johnathan Swift’s A Modest Proposal and Mark Twain’s The War Prayer, but missed the Poe here!!
When I had a irregular heart condition which occasionally sent me in a state of panic, my doctor (american) recommended that pressing my eyeballs might offer relief. He did not explain how it worked.
I did this for some time, with mixed results (of course), until I had an heart ablation which fixed the problem. However I now have a eye condition which was caused by leaking eyefluid. This condition has stabilized (perhaps from not pressing on the eyes anymore).
Anyway, I believe now that the practise of “pressing or poking eye balls” is not a prudent thing to do under any circumstance.
I can’t believe people would risk their eyesight with something that stupid!!
