Niels Peter Lemche
Professor Niels Peter Lemche (University of Copenhagen) is a leading figure in the movement known as "biblical Minimalism" a school of biblical interpretaion emphasizing that the Bible should be read and analysed primarily as a collection of narratives and not as an accurate historical account of the Middle East, and closley associated with the literary and archaeological studies at the University of Copenhagen. Lemche considers the traditional narratives of Israel's history as contained in the bible to be so late in origin as to be useless for historical reconstruction. His alternative reconstruction is based entirely on the archaeological record. His thesis is construed in a variety of significant publications, including Israelites in History and Tradition (1998) and the recently published (2008) The Old Testament: Between Theology and History .
