“No God But Funny” Contest Winning Entries
Earlier this year, CFI partnered with the Freedom from Religion Foundation to sponsor the "No God But Funny" contest, headed by Pamela Koslyn. We asked talented producers and writers to create a sitcom featuring a likable atheist lead character, as a means to begin to undo the stereotypes of nonbelievers in popular entertainment as grouchy, amoral, or hopelessly lost. On August 24, we announce the winners: John Dardis of Los Angeles -- best fully produced pilot "webisode," with a prize of $25,000, for Earth Angel; and Rachel Lewis and Daniel Beecher of Salt Lake City -- best TV pilot script, with a prize of $15,000, for Thank God I'm an Atheist.
In a special "Feed Your Brain" presentation, we will show the winning "webisode" followed by a staged reading of the script performed by actors in conjunction with a Q&A with the writers. Along with several other talented actors, Jim O’Heir, co-star of NBC’s Parks and Recreation will be reading one of the roles.
Earth Angel is a documentary-style story of a witty young woman named Angel who, on her 18th birthday (which is also Christmas Day, of course), started coming out as an atheist to her neighbors. The outline for the next 11 webisodes has Angel coming out as an atheist to 11 other neighbors, one for each day of the "12 days of Christmas." In Thank God I'm an Atheist, two young atheists in love, Holly and Matt, are about to be married but have to contend with Holly's devoutly Mormon parents, who have very different plans for them.
