Access to reproductive health writ large is perhaps the one area of development assistance or humanitarian aid which runs up against religious walls or religious hypocrisy. Jane Roberts co-founded 34 Million Friends of the United Nations Population Fund on July 22, 2002 (www.34millionfriends.org) when the George W. Bush administration refused to release the congressionally-approved sum of $34 million. Now Donald Trump has similarly defunded UNFPA. Tying together the themes of foreign assistance, the Global Gag Rule, the Kemp-Kasten Amendment, gender inequality, gender-based violence, family planning, abortion, population, and the environment, Jane will inform and inspire us with her amazing stories. She also wonders if her atheism might discourage adherents to her cause.
