Darwin’s Birthday Activities
ACTIVITIES COMMEMORATING DARWIN’S BIRTHDAY
February 12th is Darwin’s Birthday and his 200th Birthday is just one year away. That day will also celebrate the 150th Anniversary of the publication of his legendary book On the Origin of Species. Let us take the opportunity to support the teaching of evolution in our schools. This Scientific theory is the foundation of Biology. Its adoption in the science class affects the future of science in America and the nature of scientific Inquiry. Let us prepare ourselves for next year’s celebration by participating in this year's events, on February the 3rd and the 12th.
Evolution vs. Intelligent Design in the science classroom
Current events in America signal a religious war against Darwin’s Evolution Theory. To learn more we will begin by showing a film that illustrates the Dover Area trial. At the end, the Judge ruled unconstitutional the teaching of religion in science classes and unveiled Intelligent Design as another attempt to bring Creationism into the public schools. Yet, the controversy is not over, as the hearings for the adoption of new Education Science Standards for the State of Florida testify. For many, all species were created by God in their present from, less than 10,000 years ago. The film not only shows the debate, but the lack of understanding of the methods of science and the literal interpretation of the Bible texts by many Churches and believers.
At the end of this film, the floor will be open for discussion. Is the theory of evolution compatible with the teachings of the Bible? Has the controversy shifted for some religious groups to other areas or ended with the Dover Trial? How important is the adoption of new Science Education Standards for Florida and how can we support the changes? What conclusions can we infer from the different Town Meetings in Florida?
