Presented biennially since September 2001, the Center for Inquiry–Northeast Ohio Humanism Award honors Northeast Ohioans who have played a significant role in helping to foster a secular society based on science, reason, freedom of inquiry, and humanist values.

Please join us this year as we pay tribute to Page Stephens, PhD, who, as cofounder and seventeen year president of the now-disbanded South Shore Skeptics, was instrumental in cultivating a burgeoning skeptics community on the southern banks of Lake Erie and proved himself a staunch defender of science over pseudoscience.

Join us for:

  • Award presentation and acceptance speech by Dr. Stephens
  • Talk by our guest speaker, internationally renowned biologist and social commentator PZ Myers
  • Dinner and conversation with speakers and your fellow Northeast Ohio humanists

ABOUT OUR SPEAKERS:

Humanism Award Honoree

Page Stephens, a retired professor of anthropology, taught at the University of Illinois and Cleveland State University. In 1965, he graduated from Wabash College in Indiana with a degree in history and went on to earn a doctorate in anthropology from the University of Illinois in 1973. Ten years later, with assistance from the Committee for the Scientific Investigation of Claims of the Paranormal (now Committee for Skeptical Inquiry) and astronomers Steve Shore and Nick Sanduleak, Stephens cofounded the South Shore Skeptics (SSS), an organization he led for the next seventeen years. Through SSS, Stephens helped cultivate a vibrant skeptics community in Northeast Ohio and proved himself a staunch defender of science over pseudoscience. Also a writer, folksong enthusiast, and civil-rights and antiwar activist, Stephens is currently working to revise his ideas on cultural ecology and is teaching himself to play guitar and compose music.

PZ MyersGuest Speaker

PZ Myers is an associate professor at the University of Minnesota Morris, where he teaches biology with a special focus on development and evolution. He also is the author of Pharyngula, the most heavily trafficked science blog on the Internet, described as “evolution, development, and random biological ejaculations from a godless liberal.” There, in addition to championing, explaining, and defending science, he’s been known (to the point of infamy) to poke at the follies of creationists, Christians, crystal-gazers, Muslims, right-wing politicians, apologists for religion, and anyone who doesn’t appreciate how much the beauty of reality exceeds that of ignorant myth. Myers was named the American Humanist Association’s “Humanist of the Year” in 2009.
