“A Time of Transition” Conference with Mark Crispin Miller
Join the Center for Inquiry Community of NE Ohio and the NE Ohio Chapter of Americans United for the Separation of Church and State for an exploration of some of the important political issues of the upcoming election, including electoral reform, global warming, bioethics, church/state separation, and science education.
Scheduled speakers and their topics:
Dr. Mark Crispin Miller - "How to Reclaim Our Democracy: Thoughts on the 2008 Election (If Any)"
Dr. Miller, editor of Loser Take All: Election Fraud and the Subversion of Democracy, is a professor of Media, Culture, and Communications at New York University. He is also the author of Fooled Again: The Real Case For Electoral Reform, The Bush Dyslexicon: Observations on a National Disorder, and Cruel and Unusual: Bush/Cheney's New World Order. Dr. Ronald Lindsay - "Future Bioethics"
Dr. Lindsay, an attorney, is the CEO of Center for Inquiry Transnational. Dr. Lindsay also received his Ph.D. in philosophy from Georgetown University, with a specialty in bioethics. His recently published book, Future Bioethics: Overcoming Taboos, Myths and Dogmas, reframes the debates surrounding current controversies in bioethics. In it, he carefully examines claims made by many policy makers and ethicists on topics such as assistance in dying, genetic engineering, and embryonic stem cell research.
Richard Katskee, J.D. - "Science Education and Church/State Separation"
Katskee is the Assistant Legal Director at Americans United for Separation of Church and State. He litigates constitutional challenges brought under the Establishment, Free Exercise, and Free Speech Clauses of the First Amendment. He was one of the principal attorneys for the plaintiffs in Kitzmiller v. Dover Area School District, the case successfully challenging a Pennsylvania school district’s inclusion of intelligent-design creationism in its ninth-grade biology curriculum.
Dr. Stuart Jordan - "Global Warming and Climate Change"
Dr. Jordan is a senior staff scientist (Emeritus) at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, MD. Over the past decade he has spent considerable time assessing the question of the effect of the sun on global warming, a subject on which he has made many presentations to government and civic organizations. More recently, he has become a member of the Local Organizing Committee (LOC) of the Center for Inquiry Office of Public Policy in Washington, with which he has briefed a number of Congressional staffers on global warming legislation.
