On Mon., July 7, Cleveland Chapter Chair Brian Harrington will present “Logical Fallacies and How to Spot Them.” When discussing difficult topics, we are often presented with arguments that at the moment make sense, but after thoughtful consideration, they don't anymore. These are the product of logical fallacies, for example: arguments from nature, historicity, and popularity; non-sequitors; ad hominems; red herrings and the like. A frustrating thing about these fallacies is that we often don't realize they happened until after the argument is over. You may have conceded a point you shouldn't have, or worse. The trick is spotting them in the discussion, calling them out, and explaining why the logic is fallacious. Brian will give a short presentation explaining the basic logical fallacies and some tips on identifying them. Following that we'll be playing an interactive game, with prizes, called "Spot the Logical Fallacy."
