The Center for Inquiry responded to President Trump’s first State of the Union address by pointing out how his unity message excluded atheists and those who accept the reality of science.
“Donald Trump’s call for unity was an empty and false gesture,” said Robyn Blumner, president and CEO of the Center for Inquiry. “By asserting that all of us have faith in ‘our God,’ he excluded millions of atheist Americans. The President of the United States made clear that nonbelievers do not belong in his vision of a united America.
“But it wasn’t only atheists that the president turned his back on. Touting his ‘historic actions to protect religious liberty,’ he was signaling to his religious right supporters that he will stand with them when they seek to discriminate against LGBTQ Americans, and he will side with religious dogma over women’s reproductive rights.
“With his fabrication of a ‘war on American energy,’ and perpetuating the myth of ‘beautiful, clean coal,’ the president brushed aside the consensus of scientists that his policies will worsen global climate change.
“Touting a ‘right to try’ for untested medicines, he ignored the dangers to desperate patients posed by unsafe and unproven treatments.
“And of course, by assuming we all share a ‘trust in God,’ President Trump wrote off every single American who doubts, questions, or chooses not to believe in God. To those who do not fit within his narrow and false version of America, the president sought no common ground, but only raised walls of division.”
