The Center for Inquiry emphatically denounced President Trump’s reported decision to withdraw the United States from the Paris climate accord, condemning the administration’s rejection of science, its indifference to global catastrophe, and the erosion of America’s status as a world power.
“This is a wholesale abdication of the United States’ leadership role among nations,” said Robyn Blumner, President and CEO of the Center for Inquiry. “It sends the unmistakable message that this administration not only ignores science, but is indifferent to the suffering and upheaval of unmitigated climate change that billions of people will endure for generations.”
The Paris climate accord is a non-binding international agreement, an expression of a nation’s sincere intention to pursue certain goals to lessen the rise in global temperatures by reducing carbon emissions. Apart from the U.S., which news outlets have reported is ready to withdraw, only Nicaragua and Syria have rejected the agreement.
“Should he go through with withdrawal from the climate accord, the president will be turning his back on the rest of the world while it almost literally burns,” said Blumner. “Having isolated our country, the president would be transforming America from a global superpower to a rogue state.”
The Center for Inquiry seeks to advance reason, science, and humanist values, and combating science denialism, pseudoscience, and misinformation are at the core of its mission. In 2015, CFI’s Committee for Skeptical Inquiry succeeded in changing some of the language around climate change, as when its efforts led the Associated Press to begin referring to those who reject the reality of climate change as “doubters” rather than “skeptics,” a term that should be reserved for those who question extraordinary or baseless scientific claims.
“Our best hope now is that President Trump might be moved by the loss of American prestige, heeds the counsel of experts rather than ideologues, and rejoins the international community in this critical project,” said Blumner. “One way or the other, the reality of climate change will catch up to us all.”
