CFI-Harlem Monthly Meeting
Dear CFI-Harlem members,
Let's see if we can get it all in. First up will be an article by Mel Reeves.(I had some problems forwarding the direct link and with my own attachment feature. Go to http://www.blackagendareport.com, put in their search engine: "Sacred Cows, Black Jesus and Civil Religion" by Mel Reeves or "Reeves" and look for the article that's aforementioned). How does it resonate with you? Is it convincing? Is it definitive? Have you ever heard of Civil Religion?
The end discussion will be about Black Mormons. Yes, Black Mormons. (See attachment below). What is the appeal to the Black community? Does the interest surprise you? Of course, you know about their huge beautiful edifice at 128th and Lenox. What ever thought provoking questions or comments you have will be discussed at the meeting.
If your attendance is unlikely, you can send me a brief comment. I'll read it to the group at the meeting. I'm especially curious about your thoughts on the Reeves' article.
End note: Late '60s and early '70s R&B singer Gladys Knight became a Mormon in 1998 after her son Jimmy and his family did. Gladys Knight was the singer in the R&B group Gladys Knight and the Pips. Today (2001 A.D.) she writes and performs Mormon Gospel music.
BTW, be sure to visit the website cfinyc.org about our Harlem group in particular and CFI (Center For Inquiry) in general. The flier and meeting notice are always there to inform others you know about us.
