The yearly award is given to the author of the published work that best exemplifies healthy skepticism, logical analysis, or empirical science. Specter, who is a staff writer at The New Yorker , is being honored for his recent book, Denialism: How Irrational Thinking Hinders Scientific Progress, Harms the Planet, and Threatens Our Lives.

The Center for Inquiry in New York City is hosting a small dinner where Specter will briefly speak about his book and accept his award. However, this event is now full and closed to the public.
