Music Monday: Madonna - “Nothing Fails”
February 26, 2013
Today’s Music Monday (Tuesday edition) is brought to you by Spotify’s shuffle algorithm. No, seriously, I opened up the Spotify Course of Reason Music Monday playlist, clicked on a Rush song and then the next song was Madonna. It’s a catchy little tune too. I found myself humming the notes of, “I’m not religious.” Luckily, Sarah wasn’t in the office today or else I’m sure I would have been asked to stop. Not simply because humming is annoying, but because I have an awful voice.
Regardless, the song is about those times of transcendence in your life, whether it be the result of the closeness with a loved one, a brilliant new perspective on some facet of life, or simply looking up to the sky and being humbled by your place in the universe. The song reminds me of a great Christopher Hitchens quote:
“If you want to be awe inspired, ladies and gentlemen, and let me say, let me just tell you that those of us who do not believe we are divinely created, let alone divinely supervised, are not immune to the idea of awe and beauty and the transcendent. Let me invite you to look for a moment at the pictures taken by the Hubble telescope. Some of you may have done it. If you haven’t done it now, or yet, do it soon.”
I have embeded the live version because I often find myself the state of awe that Hitchens was describing when I see artists in a live setting. Enjoy!
As always, if you get a chance, send your suggestions for future Music Mondays to me at firstname.lastname@example.org, leave a comment below, or @tweet us at @CFIOnCampus. Your suggestions, along with future and past songs, may end up in the official Course of Reason Music Monday Grooveshark playlist or Spofity playlist that anyone can listen to.
