Music Monday: Modern Life Is War - “War”

April 1, 2013

So I have good news and bad news. The bad news is that I am no longer going to be updating the Grooveshark playlist. I have moved on to Spotify and left Grooveshark behind. Unfortunately this mean TOOL or Garth Brooks will no longer be available on the official Music Monday playlist, though I still reserve the right to feature songs by both of those artists. The good news is that Modern Life Is War is getting back together! I expect this to mean very little to most people. However, the hardcore band based out of Marshalltown, IA, had a profound influence on me.

About a week or so ago I was trying to explain to Debbie the types of shows that I attended in high school. Verbal descriptions of a garage filled with mattresses and hardcore bands can only go so far. So let me show you.

That awkward kid circled in the above picture is me. The person that looks like they are attacking me from within the confines of the mattress laden walls of what was know as the FSU garage is Jeffrey Eaton, the lead vocalist for Modern Life Is War. They were never really a highly political band, but Eaton was once quoted saying, “I feel like our generation, in the world that we’ve grown up in, is a pretty hard one to find our own identity. That’s because of things like mass media, intense advertising, public school, religion and all the things we’re fed.” So as you might imagine, some of their songs dealt with religion. I have included the lyrics to “War” for those of you with an untrained ear.

Modern Life Is War - “War”

Between the world and me: pressure-splitting seams.
Imminent danger in the headlines. Glamour on the T.V.
Chasing fools gold. Growing cold.
Drowning in anxiety.
Lack of reason: pushing symbols and clever phrasing.
False notions of ritual, credentials, comfort, safety.
Relentless and crowding.
It’s hard to breathe.
They’ll give you the disease,
then they’ll sell you the cure to set you free.

As always, if you get a chance, send your suggestions for future Music Mondays to me at chashman@centerforinquiry.net, leave a comment below, or @tweet us at @CFIOnCampus. Your suggestions, along with future and past songs, may end up in the official Course of Reason Music Monday Spofity playlist that anyone can listen to.
