Music Monday: The Pixies - “Monkey Gone to Heaven”

September 12, 2011

Welcome home from the beginning of the school/work week, hopefully it went well! Now that that’s over you can sit back and listen to another installment of Music Mondays. This week’s featured song is “Monkey Gone to Heaven” by the Pixies.

I would like to thank Dren for suggesting this week’s Music Monday.

I hope I don’t have to do much introduction to the Pixies, but you may have heard them before while watching the end of Fight Club the movie where their song “Where is My Mind” was featured.

This song was featured on the Pixies second studio album Doolittle and there is a great wikipedia entry about the specific song whose main theme is actually environmentalism but there are arguably strong influences of religious and scientific themes throughout, as you can see in the lyrics posted below.

There was a guy
An underwater guy who controlled the sea
Got killed by ten million pounds of sludge
From New York and New Jersey
This monkey’s gone to heaven
This monkey’s gone to heaven
This monkey’s gone to heaven
This monkey’s gone to heaven
The creature in the sky
Got sucked in a hole now
There’s a hole in the sky
And the ground’s not cold
And if the ground’s not cold
Everything is going to burn
We’ll all take turns
I’ll get mine, too
This monkey’s gone to heaven
This monkey’s gone to heaven
This monkey’s gone to heaven
This monkey’s gone to heaven
Rock me, Joe!
If man is 5
If man is 5
If man is 5
Then the devil is 6
Then the devil is 6
Then the devil is 6
Then the devil is 6
And if the devil is 6
Then God is 7
And God is 7
And God is 7
This monkey’s gone to heaven
This monkey’s gone to heaven
This monkey’s gone to heaven
This monkey’s gone to heaven
This monkey’s gone to heaven
This monkey’s gone to heaven
This monkey’s gone to heaven
This monkey’s gone to heaven
This monkey’s gone to heaven

As always, I would love to hear your suggestions for upcoming Music Mondays, and you can always subscribe to the Grooveshark playlist, that has been populated with past and future Music Monday songs as well as your suggestions.

What a great song! So simple and yet so profound. Another example of Black Francis' masterful songwriting.
