[Arizona] Stephen Uhl: “Can Nonbelievers Lead Moral Lives?”
Note: This is a global event that appears on all event calendars.
Summary: This presentation of atheist ethics for adults points to confusion and hypocrisy among ethics writers. Ethics deals with practical principles of behavior. Dr. Uhl shows how authoritarian approaches to ethics cannot possibly meet requirements of today's complex and rapidly changing knowledge and experience. Custom, contemporary cultural values, and enlightened self-interest enriched by compassion, all help the modern adult conscience to decide whether or not the end justifies the means.
Bio: Dr. Uhl was predestined by his mother to become a priest. He became a Benedictine monk during the twelve years of seminary preparation which led to priestly ordination. After ordination, Dr. Uhl earned a license to teach theology in pontifical universities. Ten years into the priesthood this former believer's doubts caused a divorce from the priesthood and the church. While teaching mathematics in public school, Dr. Uhl married another teacher. On earning the Ph.D. in Psychology, he enjoyed a thriving private psychology practice until retirement. Dr. Uhl is the author of Imagine No Superstition: The Power To Enjoy Life With No Guilt, No Shame, No Blame. More information is available at www.imagineNOsuperstition.com.
