Music Monday: Tom Waits - “Road to Peace”

September 19, 2011

This wasn’t supposed to be Tom Waits hour, but I seem to have found myself featuring him again for the 4th installment of Music Mondays

The reason I find myself putting up another one of Waits’ songs is that I find this song particularly relevant to current political happenings. Specifically, I am referring to a recent move by Palestinian leaders to officially request UN recognition of the state of Palestine. Now this is a very controversial topic, muddied in years and years conflict. I am not going to take a position on it at this time (though there is at least a small aspect of religious dogma playing into the conflict that I strongly oppose), I don’t think I am informed enough to do so. What I do know is that Tom Waits wrote a very moving song about the conflict between the Palestinians and Iraelis. The song is called “Road to Peace” and you can find it on his album Orphans:Bawlers, Brawlers and Bastards.

The song starts out with a story of a young man that goes by the name of Abdel Madi Shabneh and his position along the “Road to Peace.”

As always, if you have suggestions for future Music Mondays feel free to email me a or leave a comment below. Your suggestions, along with future and past songs, may end up in the official Course of Reason Music Monday Grooveshark playlist that anyone can listen to.
