Pope Shields Pedophiles; Calls Atheists Immoral

July 1, 2010

Pope Benedict XVI chastises a Cardinal who seeks transparency on sexual abuse, but fails to so much as deliver a wrist-slap to pedophilic priests.

I wrote earlier that I hoped a great number of victims of child rape at the hands of Catholic priests would utilize the decision in John V. Doe v. Holy See to sue the Catholic church back to the stone age.  To say that child molestation is merely bad would be an understatement akin to saying that the universe is "kind of big."  This point of moral convergence is so conspicuous that even prison inmates observe a hierarchy that places child rapists beneath murderers and often requires the child rapist be placed in isolation to protect them from even the most hardened criminal's sense of vigilante justice.  It is to this exceedingly low standard that the Catholic church has failed.

Earlier this year, Cardinal Christoph Schonborn said publicly that...

...Cardinal Angelo Sodano had blocked an investigation of sexual abuse charges against a former archbishop of Vienna, according to the Catholic News Service.  Sodano was the Vatican's secretary of state at the time.

This is a perfectly sensible statement.  With it Schonborn expressed a willingness to take note of a rapidly growing tumor in his organization in the interest of potentially dislodging it.  The reaction from Pope Benedict XVI speaks volumes.

The pope firmly put Schonborn in his place Monday, according to a Vatican statement.

"It must be reiterated that, in the Church, when accusations are made against a cardinal, competency falls exclusively to the pope; other parties may have a consultative function, while always maintaining due respect for persons," the statement said.

Only the Pope is permitted to condemn and expose the pedophiles in their ranks?  In American cases of rape-by-priest, 44.4% were accused of raping more than one child (with 3.5% being accused of preying on ten or more children).  It is entirely feasible that the reason so many occasions of multiple offense have transpired is because the Pope has not been doing the best job (to say the very least) of policing the predators who have ascended to positions of power in the Catholic church.  To grant Pope Benedict XVI sole responsibility for ensuring pedophiles are dealt with properly seems only slightly more counter-productive that assigning Michael Vick the task of caring for your dogs.

This all comes from a man who claims that without faith there is only interest in one's own well-being.

“If the human creature's relationship with the Creator weakens, matter is reduced to egoistic possession, man becomes the ‘final authority,’ and the objective of existence is reduced to a feverish race to possess the most possible.”

There is a deep, delectable irony to be had in this scenario.  Here we have a man who has shielded predators of children from justice and subsequently shuffled them about so that the church may avoid scandal at the expense of creating more victims.  Yet somehow this man has found the temerity to exclaim that atheists cannot be moral.  It is weapons-grade depressing when you reflect on the number of people who listen to him and nod their heads.
