Proof: Once upon a time… the mainstream psychology said that every gay person was “due to childhood trauma”. They told the gay people to forget about it, just get married and it would go away, you will be normal and happy. The people tried that idea for a long time. How did it work out???? Pride parade has gone on for about fourty years, proof that they are here to stay, that is proof that the old idea is ridulous and based on hating the gays not respecting them. How you ever talked to a gay person about their sexuality? I’ll tell you, they are not confused, they are gay. :)
Psychology Ph.D. ... are they confused?? In Freud’s days he came up with the idea that the mind has two sides, the Id and the Ego. The Id reasons, plans, calculates, it keeps us calm. The Ego is emotional, it is wild, it is love, sadness, happiness, it is not the same as the Id. There is a fight between them, and a balance. This was Freud’s model for the human mind. He had the idea that during talk therapy the patient talks and the therapist just sits there and keeps their mouth shut, even for years of therapy, chaining the therapist down. He thought that every man was obsessively jealous and enraged at their father for possessing his mother, who he wanted not just for care and motherly love, but for sex. Freud, perhaps was projecting?
Freud insisted on his ideas, insisted that his model was true and complete as his apprentice Young argued that it was missing a way to balance and moderate the Id and Ego. Young argued that the Superego plays this role and completes Freud’s model, Freud argued no and insisted. Freud denied the Superego until the day he died, thus ending his side of the argument and freeing Young to add the Superego. I’d call that prove that neither model was true and complete, and that both of them were in a egotistical fight to defend their ideas, rather than promote the facts. Since then psychology has devised perhaps a thousand more models… with just one human mind, what are we supposed to do with a thousand models? We all know the truth that the brain is made of a cerebellum, cerebrum, medula… why bother with psychology’s models? Skeptics know that all this “mind” talk is just the same old dualist idea, anyway.
So since Freud’s time the science of psychology has progressed, they’ve moved on, and now-a-days they promote happiness. Happiness… in the century since Freud, this is progress that psychology has made, they have discovered that happiness is a good thing.
So what does psychiatry/psychology have that is real? There is some reality, the drugs really effect people, but I hear that patients must go through a trial-and-error process to find one that works. Hypnotism can have real effects, if done right. I hear they do pretty well with the addicts. What else about psychology is real, people?
Now-a-days they prescribe equine therapy, a trip to a ranch with landscaping and care,... this is more advancements, now they’ve discovered giving people pets, hobbies, or lovely vacations cheers them up. Who doesn’t know that already? What next dolphin therapy, dog therapy, cat therapy, bicycle therapy, and fishing therapy? As a science, they lack, this is a century of progress.
Don’t get me wrong, I think that they are well intentioned people, and do some good for some people. But I doubt they do more than what a caring friend could do, for most problems. Find a skeptical one, if you use one.
DarronS, can you get a refund by dropping the class?
Psych 101: 1. Be happy (find some strawberries, a pet, a friend, a sunrise)
2. Set positive goals, and do them
3. Be good to your friends, demand respect from them
4. Be open minded (You were just a child in your “formative years” and so you probably misunderstood, life is complicated and children can’t handle it well. Re-experiencing them as an adult, you might want to reinterpret them with adult experience, coming to a completely different conclusion. So don’t take them too seriously, be an adult not a child.)
If they know more than that, I’d love to hear about it. :)
