Part One of a special presentation featuring Ronald A. Lindsay, Tom Flynn, Steven K. Green, EllenBeth Wachs, and David Silverman.

On March 2, 2012, the Council for Secular Humanism and the Center for Inquiry presented the opening session of their conference, titled “Moving Secularism Forward,” at the Hyatt Regency Orlando International Airport in Orlando, Florida. The first session was titled “Face-Off in Florida.” It focused on church-state controversies in Florida, the state where the conference was held. This includes a pioneering church-state lawsuit – the first ever with the Council for Secular Humanism as plaintiff – that has religious conservatives so nervous, they are now on their third attempt to amend the Florida constitution to make the suit go away.

In this segment Ronald A. Lindsay, president and CEO of the Center for Inquiry and the Council for Secular Humanism, reviews the remarkable story of this ongoing legal controversy.  He is followed by Steven K. Green, professor of law at Willamette University and an authority on so-called Blaine amendments, which limit states’ financial support of religious organizations.
