Yes, he hated to perform publicly. He was very much an eccentric and often played the piano sitting on a very low chair so that his chin was at the level of the piano keys. He also hummed or sang along with his playing, driving sound technicians to distraction. But he produced several unequalled recordings.

Yeah, he was a pretty quirky fellow. In fairness, though, a lot of concert pianists ended up ending their solo performing career fairly early. It’s a pretty stressful gig.
