Religion and Politics - Can They Coexist?

11:00 AM, Sunday, April 6, 2008

Unlike most Western democracies, the U.S. continues to see an infusion of religion into the political process. Candidates frequently speak about their personal religious beliefs, and some even use faith-based appeals to win support from certain blocs of voters. Many in the religious community work to pass laws based on their own interpretation of Christianity.

The Rev. Barry Lynn will argue that as a legally secular republic that includes people of all faiths and none, the U.S. must refrain from basing its laws on religion. Lynn will explain why religious and secular nonprofit groups should respect federal laws that bar intervention in partisan politics.

The Rev. Barry Lynn serves as executive director of Americans United, a Washington D.C.,-based organization dedicated to preserving the Constitution’s religious liberty provisions. His most recent book is Piety and Politics: The Right Wing Assault on Religious Freedom and he is co-author of the forthcoming First Freedom.
