Light The Night
What is Light The Night?
Each year, in communities all across the United States and Canada, teams of families, friends, coworkers, and local and national corporations come together to raise funds for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s (LLS’s) Light The Night Walk events and bring help and hope to people battling blood cancers. This year CFI and many other like-minded organizations have joined together to mobilize our members and affiliates to help raise money for this important cause.
Light The Night (LTN) is a leisurely 2–3 mile evening walk held in the fall. (The exact date and time depend on the walk location.) Walkers carry illuminated balloons—white for survivors, red for supporters, and gold in memory of loved ones. LTN walkers raise funds and walk as individuals or on teams with friends, family, and coworkers. With the help of LTN, teams set up their own fundraising webpages where they can solicit donations and sponsors. The donations collected by each team will enable lifesaving blood cancer research, free educational materials, and patient support services such as Family Support Groups. Over 1,000,000 people in the United States are currently living with, or are in remission from, leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease, or myeloma. LLS has invested more than $814 million in research aimed at treating and curing blood cancer, with $76.7 million invested in 2011 alone.
Why Light The Night?
Pro-science, secular, and humanist organizations like CFI are uniting under the Foundation Beyond Belief (FBB) banner so we can pool our resources to raise over $500,000. Last year Foundation Beyond Belief teams raised over $430,000 to help fight blood cancers and supporting scient based medicine and support, but we can do better! We at the Center for Inquiry are encouraging people to support this worthwhile cause by joining or creating local FBB LTN teams.
To help meet this goal, the Stiefel family has pledged to match any money raised by FBB-affiliated teams up to $250,000! Watch the short video below and hear from Hemant Mehta as he encouraged last years participants to join teams and be a part of this extraordinary event. Will you join us again?
You can also read his FBB team captain letter outlining the importance of the Light The Night event.
How can I join or start a LTN team?
To join or find an already-established team near you, go to the FBB International LTN team page, locate the team that is closest to you, and click the “Join” button to begin the registration process. Remember: there are LTN walks in both the U.S. and Canada!
It’s also very simple to start your own team. First, find the walk that is nearest to you at the LTN registration page. Next, fill out some brief information about yourself and your group, and just like that you have created a team and now have access to the excellent LTN resources to help you start fundraising! The Foundation Beyond Belief has also organized an easy-to-follow team setup guide.
IMPORTANT: when you sign up your team, you’ll need to append the team name with “–FBB”; this allows LTN staff to identify which teams are a part of the Foundation Beyond Belief effort.
Don’t have a walk near you? You can also raise funds as an individual through the FBB virtual team.
How can my group benefit?
Beyond raising money for such a worthy cause, there are many benefits to participating in a LTN walk or bringing your group together to raise funds.
By participating alongside national organizations like the Foundation Beyond Belief and the Center for Inquiry, your group will earn promotional thanks for helping us meet our collective $1 million goal. Nonreligious people from around the world are putting their money (and organizing power) where their mouths are, supporting science and a humanist cause. You and your group should and can easily be a part of this great moment!
Hug an Atheist Week
CFI, along with the Foundation Beyond Belief, are encouraging groups to participate in a week long fundraising event dubbed Hug an Atheist Week to faciliate your fundraising campaing. To learn more about Hug and Atheist Week click here.
Q: My school/group isn’t near a walk. What should I do?
A: Luckily, you do not need to participate in a walk to help raise funds for the life-saving research of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. If your group is not close to a walk, please contact Breanna Baer and she will assign your group to a walk for which your group will be able to fundraise, but will not need to attend in person.
Q: I’m not sure if I can start a full team, as my group is relatively small. Can my group still participate?
A: Yes, what you can do is join another, larger, FBB team and your campus or community group can fundraise for this team. There is also the opportunity to join the FBB virtual team. All money raised under the FBB banner will be pooled in the end so it will not make a big difference. If you are unsure whether there is a local team you can join, contact Cody Hashman at CFI and he can help you find a local team to work with.
Q: Do I have to participate in the actual walk?
A: No. While the walk is a great and inspiring experience, if you cannot be at a walk for whatever reason you can still participate in the fundraising aspect of Light The Night.
Q: Should I buy running shoes for Light The Night?
A: While enthusiasm is encouraged, the Light The Night event is a leisurely 2–3 mile walk. Running is not encouraged, so casual shoes will do just fine. :)
