Film screening “MESSIAH” featuring Derren Brown, illusionist, mentalist and skeptic
Every four weeks we host a film screening at CFI Ontario and ask you to bring a snack to share.
Derren Brown, an English psychological illusionist, mentalist, and skeptic of paranormal phenomena travels to the United States to try to convince five leading figures that he has powers in their particular field of expertise. These fields are: Christian evangelism, alien abduction, psychic powers, New Age theories, and contacting the dead. In the film, Derren successfully convinced four of the five "experts" that he had powers, and they openly endorsed him as a true practitioner. The fifth expert, the Christian evangelist, while impressed by Derren's performance, asked to meet him again before giving an endorsement. The film's concept was to highlight the power of suggestion with regards to beliefs and people's abilities, and failure to question them. This is evident in many of the followers of a religion, and is what makes one's faith so difficult to question.
