5th Annual CFI-Pittsburgh Canoe Trip and Picnic!!!
Meet us at Yough Outfitters at 9:30am to be transported upstream to the put-in at Smithton, PA. The trip is a leisurely float down the Youghiogheny River, spending about 4 total hours on the water. (For those who would prefer a longer trip, put-in at Whitsett is also available for an additional $5, adding an additional 2 hours to the total on-the-water time. Transport from West newton would necessarily, of course, be 2 hours earlier.)
Halfway between Smithton and West Newton is Cedar Creek Park's boat ramp, where everybody can easily pull their boats out and stop for our famous Louisiana-style shrimp boil picnic. This is, of course, optional for those who prefer to bring their own food. It is also available to those who are not taking the river trip but who still want to participate in the picnic. And for those who prefer a bicycle as their mode of transport, the Allegheny Passage Bike Trail runs along the Yough river and passes the boat ramp/picnic area. You can park at one of the trailheads along the trail and bike to the picnic. It is also possible to rent bicycles at Trailside Treasures near the Boston Bridge in McKeesport and bike to Cedar Creek Park. This would be about a 2 ½ hour ride each way. Cost would be $20 per bike.
Costs are as follows:
Canoes - $43 per 2-person canoe (tandem kayaks are available for the same cost)
Kayaks (both sit-in and sit-on) - $26 ea
Canoe trip: Transport only (w/own boat) - $12 per person
Backrest(s) for canoes - $4 ea
Additional child's life vest for canoe - $3
