Meet Rebecca Skloot, an award-winning writer and a contributing editor at Popular Science . Her new book, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks , tells of a poor Southern tobacco farmer whose cells—taken without her knowledge—were the first “immortal” human cells grown in culture. They were vital for developing the polio vaccine and uncovered secrets of cancer, viruses, and the effects of the atom bomb. These cells are still alive today, though Henrietta has been dead for nearly 60 years. RSVP
