In Fall of 2005 the Center for Inquiry was granted special consultative status as a non-governmental organization, or NGO, under the United Nations Economic and Social Council.

This entitles the Center for Inquiry to designate official representatives to <strong>UN headquarters in New York</strong> and <strong>UN offices in Geneva</strong> <strong>and Vienna</strong>. The Center for Inquiry can participate in conferences and briefings open to NGOs, and generally present the scientific, skeptical, and secular humanist perspective to the international community.

<strong>Austin Dacey, PhD</strong>, serves as the Center for Inquiry's <strong>United Nations representative</strong> and is a contributing editor at Skeptical Inquirer and Free Inquiry magazines. He teaches philosophy, ethics, and science education at Polytechnic University and State University of New York. He is the author of articles in numerous publications including the New York Times.

In this incisive talk, philosopher Austin Dacey calls for a bold rethinking of the nature of conscience and its role in public life. The Secular Sunday platform addresses represent an alternative to traditional religious services and are designed to encourage ethical reflection and practice. They promise an innovative look at virtues, values, and the basic human decencies of love, honor, tolerance, and respect.

Dr. Hoffmann holds graduate degrees in theology from Harvard University and a PhD in Christian Origins from Oxford University, where he was Senior Scholar of St. Cross College (1980-1983). Hoffmann was the founder of the Oxford Centre for the Critical Study of Religion, and his translations and reconstructions of the writings of the Church's earliest critics, Celsus (1987), Porphyry's Against the Christians: The Literary Remains (1994), and Julian's Against the Galileans (2004) have become fundamental texts for the study of the pagan context of early Christianity. <font color="#000000" face="Times New Roman" size="3">Dr. Hoffmann traces the biography of God in three acts, from his early robust career in the Ancient Near East to the onset of terminal irrelevance in the modern period.</font> 
</p>
<p>
<em><font color="#000000" face="Times New Roman" size="3">&nbsp;</font></em><span lang="EN"><font size="3"><font color="#000000"><font face="Times New Roman">Dr. Hoffmann holds graduate degrees in theology from Harvard University and a PhD in Christian Origins from Oxford University, where he was Senior Scholar of St. Cross College (1980-1983). Hoffmann was the founder of the Oxford Centre for the Critical Study of Religion, and his translations and reconstructions of the writings of the Church&rsquo;s earliest critics, <em>Celsus</em> (1987), <em>Porphyry's Against the Christians: The Literary Remains</em> (1994), and <em>Julian's Against the Galileans</em> (2004) have become fundamental texts for the study of the pagan context of early Christianity. </font></font></font></span>
