Movie Night • 3rd Wednesday of Every Month • 7 P.M.

There's more to learning than books and lectures! Once a month, we get together to screen a movie that is both entertaining and related to our skeptical and humanist outlook. Past films have included Ridley Scott's Kingdom of Heaven, Heart of the Beholder, and The God Who Wasn't There. There's plenty of popcorn to go around!

The Cat Venom comedy group, led by improv instructor Marc Condon, presents a uniquely witty collection of improvised skits focusing on a wide range of social and political issues. Past themes have included a "Creationist Show" and a "Church and State" show.

In Fall of 2005 the Center for Inquiry was granted special consultative status as a non-governmental organization, or NGO, under the United Nations Economic and Social Council.

This entitles the Center for Inquiry to designate official representatives to UN headquarters in New York and UN offices in Geneva and Vienna. The Center for Inquiry can participate in conferences and briefings open to NGOs, and generally present the scientific, skeptical, and secular humanist perspective to the international community.

Austin Dacey, PhD, serves as the Center for Inquiry's United Nations representative and is a contributing editor at Skeptical Inquirer and Free Inquiry magazines. He teaches philosophy, ethics, and science education at Polytechnic University and State University of New York. He is the author of articles in numerous publications including the New York Times.

The Secular Conscience: Why Belief Belongs in Public Life

In this incisive talk, philosopher Austin Dacey calls for a bold rethinking of the nature of conscience and its role in public life. Inspired by an earlier liberal tradition he traces to Spinoza and John Stuart Mill, Dacey urges liberals to lift their self-imposed gag order and defend a renewed secularism based on the objective moral value of conscience.

The Secular Sunday platform addresses represent an alternative to traditional religious services and are designed to encourage ethical reflection and practice. They promise an innovative look at virtues, values, and the basic human decencies of love, honor, tolerance, and respect.

Dr. Hoffmann holds graduate degrees in theology from Harvard University and a PhD in Christian Origins from Oxford University, where he was Senior Scholar of St. Cross College (1980-1983). Hoffmann was the founder of the Oxford Centre for the Critical Study of Religion, and his translations and reconstructions of the writings of the Church's earliest critics, Celsus (1987), Porphyry's Against the Christians: The Literary Remains (1994), and Julian's Against the Galileans (2004) have become fundamental texts for the study of the pagan context of early Christianity. The Eupraxsophy Café is a forum for discussions exploring current events, art and science from a skeptical and humanist perspective. The Café is a casual affair and everyone is welcome. This week our featured guest is Dr. Brahm Segal.

Brahm Segal MD is an Associate Professor of Medicine at the University at Buffalo, and the Chief of the Infectious Diseases program at Roswell Park Cancer Institute. He will be discussing religious and mystical explanations surrounding infectious diseases.
