The Center for Inquiry is pleased to open registration for its 2013 summer program for children ages seven to sixteen. In its eighth year, Camp Inquiry will take place from August 4 through August 10 at Camp Seven Hills in Holland, New York. The site boasts 620 acres of woodland paths, meadows, streams, and hills perfect for outdoor exploration. Camp Seven Hills is fully insured and accredited with the American Camp Association. With its impressive 5 to 1 camper to counselor ratio, Camp Inquiry is run by a staff of fully screened, trained, and experienced teacher-counselors, including a trained medical professional.

This is an age of unparalleled innovations in technology: identity is stored in clouds, socializing is now a solitary experience, and information can be found with an instantaneous search. Sounds like a fantasy novel, but it’s our modern reality -- and an extremely exciting one, especially for our youth: tech-literate and plugged-in to an increasingly accessible universe of ideas in a way that no generation has been before. 

So if that’s what we now consider reality, what do you call a place where you can sky-gaze or chemically construct clouds? Where face time is literal and searches are about walks in the woods or deconstructions of logical fallacies? A world that’s wi-fi free instead of free wi-fi?

We call that an intriguing and unique opportunity. We call that reality “unplugged.” We call that Camp Inquiry.

Led by Camp Director Karen Strachan, at Camp Inquiry campers, teacher-counselors, and special guests will work together to help youth confront the challenges of living a non-theistic, skeptical, and secular lifestyle in a world dominated by religious belief and pseudoscience.

Grounded on the conviction that kids can begin establishing habits of the good and ethical life early on, Camp Inquiry has a three-part focus: the arts and sciences, the skeptical perspective, and ethical character development. Campers, teacher-counselors, and special guests will address key issues of individual identity, forging trusting relationships, establishing a sense of local and global community, and living with respect for the natural world.

Michael Cardus founded Create-Learning, a consulting, training & coaching firm that provides team building, leadership and experiential development to create great experiences for improved performance and lasting memories. Mike’s knowledge spans team building, team development, leadership development, creativity, and organizational process management. He combines a unique mix of experience, theory, creativity and organizational psychology to ensure his presentations are hands on, fully involving and educationally powerful. Mike’s practice focuses on developing accountability and collaboration amongst and within teams, and on leadership development.

Sharon Hill has been an active member of the skeptical community since 1993. In 2006, she began her blog, Doubtful, which covers topics relating to paranormal happenings, cryptozoology, anomalous natural phenomena, science & society and general skeptical goodness. Her day job is geologist and policy specialist. She has a Masters degree in education, specializing in Science and the Public, and runs the critical thinking newsblog Doubtfulnews.com.

James Randi has an international reputation as a magician and escape artist, but today he is best known as the world's most tireless investigator and demystifier of paranormal and pseudoscientific claims. He has received numerous awards and recognitions, including a Fellowship from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation in 1986. David Willey is professor of physics at the University of Pittsburgh, where he has received both the "Teacher of the Year" and "President's Excellence in Teaching" awards. Born in England and holding degrees in both physics and education, he serves as a scientific consultant to the CFI-affiliated Committee for Skeptical Inquiry (CSI) and designs physics apparatus. His wife, Raven, and he set a world record for the longest firewalk. David has appeared on numerous TV shows worldwide, best known as "The Mad Scientist" on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.

Camp Inquiry, now in its eighth year, is one of the many educational initiatives offered by the Center for Inquiry (CFI), a non-profit educational and research institution devoted to the appreciation of science and reason and their applications to human conduct.

Camp Inquiry takes place at Camp Seven Hills in Holland, New York, a spectacular locale fully insured and accredited by the American Camp Association. 35 minutes southeast of Buffalo, the camp features approximately 620 acres of woods, meadows, streams, and hills. Camp Inquiry staff consists of trained and experienced teacher-counselors, including a licensed medical professional.
