Richard Ely: Evolution and the American Landscape:

A Billion Years of Change

This coming Thursday, March 27 Richard Ely will give the SBC talk and you would be sorry to miss it. Anyone who lives in a geologic smorgasbord such as Sonoma County should wonder how the place got this way. But not only did our county become assembled from geologic flotsam, jetsam and detritus but our part of the world seems to have resembled a giant garage sale. Richard will give an illustrated talk about the last half billion years and the astonishing dynamics of what, in ancient history, was supposed to be an earthly landscape that behaved itself.

Take a time travel tour of the geography of North America from 550 million years ago to the present. This talk will feature PowerPoint projections of about 45 exquisitely detailed paleogeographic maps prepared by Ron Blakey of the University of Northern Arizona. Geologists consider these maps some of the best ever done, both for their accuracy and beauty. Watch mountain ranges rise and fall, continents collide, oceans open and close, the sea repeatedly advance and retreat across the continent. Richard Ely is a consulting geologist with a lifelong history of interest in paleogeography.

The Science Buzz Cafe is dedicated to the night science tradition. It is for professional scientists who do it for money and for the amateurs who do it for love.
