Barbara Oakley

Dr. Barbara Oakley is a professor of engineering at Oakland University in Rochester, Michigan.  She is a Fellow of the World Academy of Art and Science as well as the American Institute of Biological and Medical Engineers, and a recent Vice President of the IEEE-Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society-the world's largest bioengineering organization.  She holds a doctorate in the integrative discipline of systems engineering, and her research highlights how neuroscience is informing our understanding of complex societal issues. Professor Oakley is the author/editor of Evil Genes (2007), Cold-Blooded Kindness (2011), and Pathological Altruism (2012). 

Professor Oakley's background includes stints as both enlisted and officer in the U.S. Army.  She also has extensive working experience in China, Russia, Germany, Antarctica, and New Zealand, and has traveled throughout Europe, Asia, and the Balkans.  Dr. Oakley's adventures abroad provide vibrant color as well as a multicultural perspective to her speaking.  She lives in Rochester, Michigan, with her husband of twenty-five years.  They have four children - two adopted war refugees, and two of their own.
