Skeptically Speaking — Edmonton, AB
Desiree Schell is the host of Science for the People, a syndicated live radio show and podcast that broadcasts across North America. The program explores the connections between popular culture, history and science, and promotes critical thinking beyond the ranks of current skeptics. Desiree interviews researchers, authors and experts to help listeners understand the evidence and arguments behind what’s in the news and on the shelves.
The show also delves into the slippery social issues to which one can apply science and critical thinking, including gender, race and public policy development. “Skepticism 2.0” is rebuilding itself as a demographically broad social movement. Desiree believes this is the ideal time to plan for targeted, effective outreach, and to discuss how different communities can work together toward specific skeptical objectives.
Desiree has been involved in social justice communities, in one way or another, for the majority of her life. In her current work as a labor organizer, she creates and implements workplace and community-based campaigns of all kinds, and develops curricula and teaches courses on effective activism. Her speaking specialties include two presentations:
- "Out of the Blogs and Onto the Streets"—A bit of a history of social movements, and what skeptical activism can learn from them
- An interactive workshop on the nuts and bolts of effective, outcome-oriented Skeptical Activism
