Lawmakers allow repeal of religious aid ban to go to 2012 ballot

TALLAHASSEE — Florida lawmakers sent the emotional debate over the separation of church and state to the ballot on the last day of the legislative session Friday, signing off on a constitutional amendment dealing with spending public money for religious groups.

     
The legislation — approved by the Senate on Friday and by the House last week along party lines — would ask voters to strike a long-standing provision in the Florida Constitution that bans the use of tax dollars to aid any church or religious institution.
