CFI–Amherst Presents Nobel Laureate Sir Harold Kroto
August 29, 2011
With the attack on secular freedoms growing like never before, it is vitally important that we examine the anti-secular rhetoric and cooperative antidemocratic actions of religious and political leaders today to discover how we can safeguard our democratic rights.
The Center for Inquiry (CFI)-Transnational in Amherst, New York, will host Nobel laureate Sir Harold Kroto as he traces the course of anti-secular actions, finding that some of them have roots in German politics of the 1930s. “The Insidious Vendetta against Western Democracy” will take place from 7:30 PM-9:30 PM, Friday, September 9, at CFI-Transnational, 1310 Sweet Home Road, Amherst, NY.
Sir Harold Kroto, PhD, is currently a Francis Eppes professor of Chemistry at Florida State University, where he is carrying out research in nanoscience and cluster chemistry, as well as developing exciting new internet approaches to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) educational outreach. Among numerous awards and honors from various institutes around the globe, in 1996 he was knighted for his contributions to chemistry and later that year was one of three recipients of the Nobel Prize for Chemistry, awarded for the team’s discovery of C60 Buckminsterfullerene-a new form of carbon. He is a fellow of the Royal Society of London and holds an emeritus professorship at the University of Sussex in Brighton, United Kingdom.
Sir Harry has received several other awards, including the Copley Medal and Faraday Lectureship of the Royal Society and the Longstaff Medal of the Royal Society of Chemistry; he holds some 30 honorary degrees from universities worldwide. Sir Harry is also a distinguished supporter of the British Humanist Association.
Admission is $5 for the general public, $3 for Friends of the Center, and FREE for students (valid ID required). Free parking is available at the Center.
